We just got off the phone with the cardiologists' office and they denied that there was a problem with the liver; but that now there was a concern around his kidney.
Kidney Reflux
Reflux is a disorder in which urine backs up (refluxes) from the bladder to the kidney. The amount of reflux can be large or small.
What causes reflux?
In the human urinary tract there is a valve where the bladder joins the urine tube, or ureter, that comes from the kidney. Some children are born with a problem valve that does not close properly, so the urine refluxes back into the kidney. Other problems, called voiding disorders, cause problems controlling urine release and may also cause reflux. Some of these problems will disappear as your child gets older.
The following week we had another visit with the pediatrician and he did not necessarily agree with the findings, saying that the liver can fluctuate in size, so he will continue to keep an eye on it. (Which makes me feel good.) But now we have this new issue, which I guess needs a special doctor to examine, so he referred us to the Children's Hospital nearby to see a nephrologist.
A nephrologist is a type of doctor that specializes in diseases and conditions that affect the kidneys. They work to treat conditions such as chronic kidney disease, kidney infections, and kidney failure.
So now we wait for the referral to go through and an appointment to be set...
